Michael Herzog, Israel‘s ambassador to the U.S., stated that a recent Israeli strike on Hezbollah was crucial in preventing a regional war.

In an interview, he expressed concern over ongoing hostilities, citing the conflict with Hamas and the thousands of rockets fired into Israel since October 8. Herzog emphasized the need for a diplomatic resolution with Hezbollah, noting the plight of nearly 70,000 displaced individuals in northern Israel.

He mentioned ongoing negotiations in Cairo aimed at securing the release of Israeli hostages, with the U.S. facilitating a bridging proposal. While addressing potential discrepancies in Israeli leadership’s comments about the Philadelphi corridor, Herzog clarified that Israel is not obligated to withdraw forces from the area at this time.

He also indicated that while Iran may be contemplating an attack on Israel, U.S. deterrence has played a significant role in preventing such actions for now.
